Heartburn – causes and simple remedies


Heartburn is a common ailment with a higher intensity in some people. It happens after a meal due to reflux of stomach acids into the food pipe. Once the food reaches the stomach through the food pipe, it passes through a valve. In the stomach, the valve closes and the process of digestion starts by mixing the foods with certain acids. The valve is a no return valve which does not allow regurgitation of foods. If the acids still come into the food pipe, it causes a burning sensation in the chest which we term as heartburn. Frequent heartburns can ruin your appetite and affect your health. There are a few home remedies one can take for this.

1. Chewing gum – chewing gum improves flow of saliva to the stomach. This soothes the stomach and calms it. It should be chewed after a meal.

2. Aloe vera – widely known for its herbal remedial properties, it is an anti inflammatory agent, thus, soothing heartburn. Use it as a drink before meals in small quantities.

3. Baking soda – mix a glass of water with half a teaspoon of baking soda. Drink this to reduce heartburn. This is not to be used regularly as it has a high salt content.

4. Slippery elm – the extract of this tree is extremely useful for treating heartburn. Mix a few teaspoonfuls of the extract in a cup of water and have it after meals. It strengthens the mucous layer within the stomach and helps reduce digestion issues.

5. Banana – bananas are extremely good in aiding digestion and therefore, reducing heartburn by strengthening the stomach lining.

6. Herbal tea – delicious cardamom tea is a good way to reduce heartburn. Cinnamon can be substituted for cardamom if desired.

7. Ginger – easily available in the market, ginger in your meal will aid digestion and reduce heartburn.
