Steroids are used in a lot of disease treatments. It is known to treat a variety of illnesses, especially, in those involving the immune system. The steroids are chemicals similar to hormones which are produced by the adrenal glands to fight stress. They are strong medicines and can have dangerous side effects. Therefore, people are usually instructed to take this for a short while.

1. There are different types of steroids – 1. Anabolic steroids 2. Corticosteroids. The former are of a harmful nature while the latter has myriad health benefits.

2. Steroids are important in sustaining life. without them, it is difficult to survive. Some of them are used to suppress inflammation.

3. Some steroids come from the adrenal glands while some comes from the testes and the ovaries. The latter are called sex steroids. They are used for controlling metabolism and sexual functions.

The different types of steroid can also be classified as – Hydrocortisone, Prednisolone and Dexamethasone. The first is the least potent; the next is most commonly used as it is in the mid range in potency while the last one is the most potent.

So where can steroids be used?

Steroids can be used in various medical conditions, especially in which inflammatory response has to be controlled.

  • In case of asthma, they are to be administered through tablet, injection or through inhaler.
  • In cases like rheumatoid arthritis, SLE and other connective tissue related disorders, steroids are highly recommended.
  • In case of life threatening situations like adrenal insufficiency and severe allergic reactions, steroids can be used.
  • It can be used in autoimmune diseases like lupus and multiple sclerosis
  • There are a lot of skin disorders such as eczema and rashes which can be cured effectively through steroid use.
  • It is used in curative measure in some kinds of cancer.
