Coffee addiction in men and its side effects

Coffee addiction in men

Coffee is one of the essentials of today’s work and lifestyle. One of the most sought after stimulants, coffee is really helpful whenever we get tired but have a huge workload ahead of us. Caffeine in coffee blocks adenosine, a chemical which makes one drowsy. In this manner, concentration increases and we become more alert. Although in moderation, coffee is harmless. But, when people, especially men in this case, get addicted, problems like nervousness, anxiety, muscle twitching and irregular heartbeats come into play. Although coffee fits seamlessly into our lives, addiction to it in men can cause severe long term effects.

1. Ulcers – Caffeine and various acids found in coffee beans irritate the stomach and small intestine. If one drinks a lot of coffee and water intake is very less, it aggravates the symptoms and can induce abdominal spasms, cramps, constipation and diarrhoea.

2. Heartburn – on consuming excess coffee, acid reflux and heartburn take place. Therefore, one must keep coffee intake to a limit.

3. Laxative – although coffee is an excellent laxative, excess coffee can stimulate peristalsis to an aggravated extent, therefore, not allowing the nutrients from the food to be digested before egesting it. Peristalsis is the process in the digestive tract through which the waste is discharged through the intestines.

4. Mineral deficiency – coffee affects the stomach and kidneys in a way that they cannot retain iron, calcium, zinc, magnesium etc. This leads to mineral deficiency in the body.

5. Acid levels – Avoid drinking coffee first thing in the morning as it stimulates the production of hydrochloric acid i the stomach. This, along with the coffee acids can make a bad combination.

6. Stress – Drinking coffee promotes the release of stress hormones cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine which increases heart rate, blood pressure and anxiety levels.

7. Bone mineral deficiency – caffeine is a mild diuretic, which speeds up the urination cycle but erodes calcium in the body.
